Syberia Developer: Microids A preview by slydos, 23rd November 2001
In March/April 2002 Microids wants to publish Syberia, after Amerzone the next adventure game by Benoit Sokal. This time Sokal wants to abduct us into cold, northern regions. A new 3D-Engine will be used, so that the gamers could pursue each movement of the characters and can move freely in a prerendered environment. Syberia is to be divided into two independent adventure games, from which the first will be published in spring 2002. The second game is planned for Christmas 2002. Both titles are to contain a complete and independent adventure in each case - one don't have to know the other game to understand the story. The story takes place in the 21st century. Our young heroine is called Kate Walker and is a woman barrister of the New Yorker Universal Toys Company. Kate comes into the small alpine village Valadilène, in order to acquire a factory for machines and toy. The owner, Anna Vorarlberg, died however. From her last will Kate learns that Anna had succeeded her brother Hans, who lived in Syberia. Anna tried to find out more about Hans and his aims and plans and she went on a true pigrimage to unreal and abandoned places: From the alpine village to the university of Barrockstadt (whole city in Art Dèco style), into an industrial city with a space station, to Arabald, a port at the dead sea. Kate herself now starts out for this long and fascinating journey to find the truth that Hans was looking for. She gets help from machines and robots, created by the ingenious Hans. Kate is will get to know, what the true reason for Hans was to leave the village Valadilène and what he was really looking for: He was looking for an island, on which today still mammoths are living. In the process of the story Kate forgets more and more about her actual request and is fascinated more and more by the true story of Hans. It's interesting that we are confronted here once again with a female heroine, similar to Atlantis 3. From Microids one can surely expect excellent graphics, but we must now wait whether this time, after the two games with short game length (Amerzone and Road to India), more store is set by length and gaming depth. In the moment there is no more information, e.g. to the interface or the technical requirements. And it's not known at the moment if the title "Syberia" will be used for the German version too.
